The Life and Death
of 9413

(1928)

The Life and Death of 9413, a Hollywood Extra (1928), directed by Robert Florey and Slavko Vorkapich, is also known as $97 since the film was allegedly produced for that amount. Miniature sets and spare production design by Vorkapich kept costs low, while a wry, cynical humor buoys the message of the film — that dreams of becoming a star in the dehumanized Hollywood system are empty and prone to disappoint.

Ratings (1-10): video: 8 / audio: 7 / additional content: 8 / overall: 8.

This Blu-ray Disc edition has been mastered from the 2005 high-resolution scan (originally prepared for the Unseen Cinema boxset noted below) from a very-good 35mm print held by Film Preservation Associates. The scan has not been digitally cleaned, repaired or stabilized. The older HD scan benefits a bit here from its inclusion in this Blu-ray Disc, with its higher-than-DVD image resolution.

The film is accompanied by an electronic music score performed by Carlos Dominguez and Alex Lough. We're not certain that this score’s grinding other-worldliness does the film any service other than to ensure there is some kind of sound accompaniment.

Visually, this is the best home video edition of the film that is available.

The Life and Death of 9413, a Hollywood Extra (1928) has been transferred from a very-good 35mm print held by Film Preservation Associates.

The silent films in the set are accompanied by newly-composed music scores by Donald Sosin, Larry Marotta, Sue Harshe and Paul Mercer. The disc also features film notes by film critic/historian Elliott Stein, and optional English language subtitles (on selected films).

As the video transfer is a little more balanced in its greyscale range, we recommend this as the best-available DVD home video edition of the film.

The Life and Death of 9413, a Hollywood Extra (1928) has been digitally transferred from a very-good 35mm print held by Film Preservation Associates.

The film is exceptionally accompanied by a digital piano music score performed by Donald Sosin.

We do not recommend this edition of the film as the video transfer is a little darker than the Kino DVD noted above and loses some image detail.
