This DVD collection of Charley Chase films is an excellent companion to the two Chase collections from Kino International released in 2004 and 2005. The discs have been mastered from a combination of 35mm, 16mm and 8mm source prints, which are occasionally poor to generally very-good in quality, with a few exceptions at both extremes. One film (Just a Minute) shows analog videotape mistracking throughout the picture.
The films are accompanied by music scores composed and performed by Ben Model, Andrew Earle Simpson, Maurice Saylor and Phil Carluzzo of the Snark Ensemble, Ben Redwine of the Redwine Jazz Band and the West End Jazz Band.
Supplementary material includes audio commentary by Steve Massa, Richard M. Roberts, Bruce Lawton, Ben Model, Robert Arkus and Yair Solan; surviving footage of Accidental Accidents (1924); an interview with Charley’s daughter, June Chase Hargis (15 minutes); featurette “The Evolution of a Gag,” with collection producer David Kalat (8 minutes); featurette “The Sounds of Silence,” with members of the Snark Ensemble (25 minutes); and the documentary The Parrott Chase (2009), including interviews with biographer Brian Anthony, archivist Ulrich Ruedel, historians Rob Farr, Bruce Lawton, Richard M. Roberts, Chris Seguin, Yair Solan and Brent Walker (45 minutes).
For our comparative reviews of some of the individual films in this collection, see our Bad Boy on home video, Courtship of Miles Sandwich on home video, Looking for Sally on home video, Married to Order on home video, Peanuts and Bullets on home video, The Poor Fish on home video, The Rent Jumpers on home video and Young Oldfield on home video pages.
Highly recommended but hard-to-find these days, even as a used item.
