On 10 July 1959, La Cinémathèque française suffered film losses in a nitrate fire. Reputedly, approximately 5000 items (it is not clear whether 5000 films or 5000 reels were lost) awaiting transport to another location were temporarily staged under a glass canopy on a hot summer day. The fire began when a reel (or reels) became heated to the point of combustion and the grouped materials quickly burned. Other sources are in conflict as to the circumstances of the fire and the extent of losses.
It is not known exactly which film materials were lost but films from both the silent and sound eras were destroyed.
