Virtually identical in content to other multifilm, multidisc Chaplin collections released circa 2004-2005, this eight-disc set has a familiar line-up of Chaplin films from his Keystone, Essanay and Mutual periods.

Delta Entertainment issued similar collections in 3-disc, 8-disc, 10-disc and 12-disc sets. You are best advised to avoid any of these Chaplin collections from Delta/Cobra (successor to Delta) as they contain some of the worst-looking prints available on home video. Absolutely shameful products from a shameless company.

Ratings (1-10): video: 3 / audio: 3 / additional content: 3 / overall: 3.

This budget DVD collection follows the suit of other big box releases: put as few films onto as many discs as possible, irregardless of print quality and sell them as cheap as possible. With so many quality versions of the later Chaplin films available, the chief attraction of this collection will be the presence of the 1914 Keystone films. But don’t expect them to be mastered from anything but poor 16mm and 8mm reduction prints.

The films are presented with soundtracks compiled from preexisting vintage recordings.

As many of the source prints utilized for this collection are truly horrible, don’t consider buying this collection. The Keystone, Essanay, Mutual and First National films have all been released on DVD home video in far superior editions transferred from 35mm prints.
